Health and Physical Education

Faculty

There are currently fourteen full-time faculty members in the Division of Health and Physical Education.  In addition to teaching and administrative responsibilities, all serve as Academic Advisors to HPE majors.

Prof. Cassandra August, CFCS, CNS

Prof August is an RD eligible nutrition educator.  She teaches Nutrition in Daily Living, Nutrition for the Athlete, a hybrid online Diet and Disease course, Freshman Experience and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Enduring Questions course.  A member of the Society for Nutrition Education and The American Dietetics Association, she belongs to the Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists and the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition practice groups.  Professor August regularly addresses audiences on current nutrition topics.  She is a past and current recipient of the Positive Force Award for support of students of color and a past recipient of the Alpha Sigma Lambda continuing Education Honor Society's Faculty Excellence Award for her work with Evening and Weekend students.

Currently teaches Family Relations, Consumer Issues, Parenting, Child in the Family, and Human Sexuality Education.  In addition to teaching, Dr. Christie is also on staff at the Learning Center.  Dr. Christie is a former recipient of the Strosacker Award for Excellence in Teaching.  She is also numbered among former winners of the Bechberger Award for Human Development, which recognizes excellence in working with students outside of the classroom.  Most recently she was named recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Leadership Award.  Dr. Christie is a member of The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Dr. Robert Fisher, Academic Coordinator HPEH

Currently teaches: Personal Health, Community Health, Principles of Health Education, and Teaching Methods in Health Education. Dr. Fisher serves as Academic Coordinator in Health Promotion and Education, providing leadership in curricular and program planning.  He holds membership in numerous professional associations in Health Promotion as well as Eta Sigma Gamma, the Health Sciences Honorary.  In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. (Coach) Fisher also serves as Head Baseball Coach.  A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the Greater Cleveland Baseball Coaches Association.

Currently teaches:  Basic and Advanced courses in Athletic Training Education, Therapeutic Modalities, Athletic Training Practicum courses as well as the Division’s Orientation course and the College’s Freshman Experience course.  Professor Gentile is the Director and  Clinical Coordinator for the CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Program at Baldwin-Wallace College.  She advises students majoring in Athletic Training Education and coordinates their clinical experiences, including the supervision of the athletic training student internship experiences at the various affiliated sites.  The B-W Athletic Training Education Program has affiliated site internship contracts with the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, as well as numerous prestigious high school programs.

Prof. (Coach) Harrer serves as Senior Women’s Administrator and Head Coach for Women’s Basketball. Most of her responsibilities are in athletics but faculty membership activity includes advising and committee work. Occasionally, Prof. Harrer teaches Coaching of Basketball as part of the academic minor in Athletic Coaching. She has been named winner of the B-W Community Relations Award as well as the Phenomenal Woman Award. She has led the basketball program into one of the top 10 DIII programs in the country  as ranked by winning percentage over the last 8 years. The women’s basketball program has also been ranked in the WBCA Academic Top 25 six of the last seven years.

Prof. Janiece Kelley-Kiteley

Currently teaches:  Modern Dance I, II, III, IV, Jazz I, II, III, IV, Tap Dance I, II, III, IV, and Ballet I, II, III, IV, Dance in the Musical Theatre, Improvisation and Choreography.
Prof. Kelley Kiteley was a founding member/dancer of the Repertory Project, a Cleveland modern dance company and has served as a dance panelist on the Ohio Arts Council and the Indiana Arts Council.  Having retired from performing several years ago, attention and time are now spent on choreography, primarily in the field of musical theatre.  Most recently her work as been seen on the stages of the Cleveland Play House, Cain Park, and Berea Summer Theatre.  She is a Bechberger Award Winner.

 

 

Dr. Jaimy M. Lekan

Currently teaches:  Strength and Conditioning, Research Design and Statistics, Fitness and Health Promotion Management, Health Behavior Management, Personal Wellness, and Weight Training.  Dr. Lekan serves as faculty advisor to the Lifespan student group in the Division and is involved in Faculty Student Collaboration 399 with HPE majors.  She is an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine at both the
-regional and national levels, currently serving as Editor of the Midwest Newsletter.

Currently teaches Kinesiology/Biomechanics, Medical Terminology, Principles of Sport and Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation and Education, Community Recreation, and Camping.
Dr. Morton has traveled extensively throughout the world, camped on six continents, affording her the opportunity to meet and interact with international students and deal with global issues. Current interests and research include program planning/volunteering with the Olympics and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and curriculum development for globalization of Physical Education, such as Theory and Practice of Chinese Physical Education.  Much of her current committee work at B-W reflects her interest in issues and involvement in multicultural/international affairs.  
 
Mr. Bruce Pietz, Assistant Professor, Academic Coordinator HPET

Prof. Pietz currently servese as the Academic Coordinator for Physical Education and teaches: HPE Methods,  Techniques of Instruction and pedagogy courses. Prof. Pietz is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance as well as a member of NASPE, NDA, and MAHPERD.  Past professional development activities include attending state, district, and national AAHPERED conventions, research presentations, and teaching methods presentations.  He is currently working on his dissertation with a topic concerning activity levels of physical education teachers and the activity levels of K-12 students.  Additional research interests include physical education teaching methodology and levels of student learning and interest in physical education.

Prof. Jill Schubert

Currently teaches:Upper and Lower Extremity Evaluation, Therapeutic Exercise, First Aid, First Year Experience, Orientation to HPE, and Essentials of Athletic Training.  As a B-W alumnus, Prof Schubert brings her experience as a certified athletic trainer in a clinical setting to Baldwin-Wallace College.  In addition to being an Approved Clinical Instructor for the Athletic Training Education Program, Prof. Schubert also serves as Head Athletic Trainer for the Women's Volleyball Team and faculty co-advisor for the student organizations COAST and Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy Club.  Prof. Schubert is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association and advises students with interests in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Pre-Physical Therapy.  Additionally Prof. Schubert embraces the Liberal Arts philosophy collaborating with several different departments on campus as well as professionals off campus to enrich her student's in class experiences.  Most recently Prof. Schubert has been studying the integration of alternative medicine with that of traditional sports medicine.

Currently teaches:  Dance History, Dance in the Musical Theatre, Dance Performance and Production, Foundations/Curriculum Development in Physical Education, Tap Dance, Ballroom Dance, Archery, Dance Appreciation. Professor Strew is Academic Coordinator for the dance program and Director of the Student Dance Concert.  She serves on the HPE Division Council and on Dance and Physical Education Focus Groups.  Prof. Strew is the senior faculty member at B-W, Professor Strew represents HPE on  Faculty Governance Councils.  A former Bechberger Award recipient, Professor Strew was also honored with the Distinguished Faculty Leadership Award.  She is a member of DanceOhio and the American Alliance for Health and Physical Education including National Dance Association. 

Dr. Alvy Styles, Academic Coordinator, HPEM

Currently teaches:  Introduction to Sport Management, Program Organization and Administration,
Ethics in Sport Management, Legal Issues in Sport Management, Fitness, and Weight Training.  Her primary research focus is on "risk management practices" for administrators in sport, recreation, and
sport settings.  A native of Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Styles formerly taught at Ashland University and Kent State University.  She has published numerous refereed articles, abstracts, and proceedings, and has presented at various state and national conventions. 

 

Dr. Amy Jo Sutterluety, Academic Coordinator HPES/HPEP

Currently teaches:  Physiology of Exercise, Exercise Prescription for Special Populations, Health and Physical Fitness Assessment Techniques.  She is the Academic Coordinator of Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy for the Division, providing leadership in curricular and program development.  She is advisor to the Pre-Physical Therapy/Exercise Science Student Organization and co-coordinator of LifeSpan.  She has been instrumental in securing funding and implementing an employee health promotion program on campus.  She is past president of the Midwest American College of Sports Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.  She is currently a speaker for the American Heart Association,  and a member of the Health Educators Association of Greater Cleveland.  She received the Strosacker Award for Excellence in Teaching at Baldwin-Wallace College in 2000.  This award is given each year to a faculty member who is nominated by students, faculty and staff.

Dr. William Taraschke

Currently teaches:  Motor Learning, Personal Health. In addition to his academic courses, student advising, and committee work, Dr. (Coach) Taraschke also serves as Head Coach in Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Head Coach, Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field.  Taraschke is a member of the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA); the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; a member of numerous academic honoraries and a guest lecturer at clinics. Taraschke also has served as the NCAA Division III national meet director three times; and Chair of the NCAA Div.III Track Coaches Committee  for three years.
