Neuroscience Professor Andrew Mickley Named Ohio Professor of the Year
Announced in Washington, D.C. Thursday, November 20, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council  for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country—those who excel in teaching and positively influence the lives and careers of students. It is the only national program to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

Meet Synergies….Soon
Look for a new Baldwin-Wallace College magazine to be launched in the coming week.  The new publication, Synergies: The Magazine of Baldwin-Wallace College, succeeds the College tabloid, Pursuit, and will help the College tell its story to more than 40,000 of its alumni and friends.

On the Trail of Lewis and Clark
B-W students followed the trail of Lewis and Clark just prior to the start of the fall semester.  Through the trip plus a minimester class, students could earn a total of six credits divided among geology, business and leadership.

U.S. News Calls Baldwin-Wallace a "School to Watch"
In a new category for the annual survey, B-W was cited as an “Up-And-Coming School” and “School to Watch.”  For the 15th consecutive year, Baldwin-Wallace College ranked in the top 15 among midwestern colleges and universities and rated highly in the category of Best Buys. 

New Weekend of Welcome Program Introduces Students to Service
Discover Cleveland was a four-day residential program for incoming students that offered them the opportunity to stay overnight at B-W's urban residential facility (Archwood House), visit Cleveland sights and participate in service initiatives.

B-W Launches Ohio's First Sustainability Major
Sustainability, green living, environmental footprint: these concepts have mushroomed in global importance in recent years. As issues surrounding sustainability continue to grow, those who have the knowledge and creativity to develop solutions that preserve our planet for future generations will be in great demand.

First Congregational Church Building Future Home of Conservatory Programs
Leaders of Baldwin-Wallace College and the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Berea have reached an agreement that would permit the College to acquire and renovate Church properties at 33 Seminary St. and 17 and 19 Church St. to secure the church’s future and provide a much-needed expansion of its Conservatory of Music.

Glenn McManus is a Winner at Cannes Film Festival
Senior Glenn McManus was part of a five-person team selected to create a short film during the Cannes Film Festival. Of the nine teams competing, McManus's team took first prize.

Football Field to be Named for Tressels
Dick, Dave and Jim Tressel returned to their alma mater May 8 to honor their parents, Lee and Eloise Tressel. The brothers provided the lead gift to replace the turf on the football field which will be named Tressel Field.

Ovation 2008 Honored Student Success
On Saturday, May 3, Baldwin-Wallace College launched Ovation 2008, a campus-wide celebration of student academic and artistic achievement and creativity.

Arts Management Students Practice the Business Aspects of Broadway
While B-W music theatre students are learning their roles for Brooklyn the Musical, B-W senior arts management students are studying the business aspects of the production. The multi-tiered partnership between B-W and Playhouse Square will culminate in the regional premiere of Brooklyn on May 1–3 at Playhouse Square.

College Radio Station, WBWC, Celebrates 50 Years
The celebration already has begun. WBWC, which began operations on March 2, 1958, is running history moments throughout the year,including interviews with former staff members, archival minutes and 1958 musiccountdowns. 

Trustee Issues $1 Million Conservatory Challenge
B-W trustee and alumna Beth Swailes issues $1million challenge as part of her pledge to Transforming Lives:  The Campaign for Baldwin-Wallace College.

Raleigh Honored in his Final Bach Festival
With the end of the academic year, Stuart Raleigh will wrap up a 34-year career as a choral director at the B-W Conservatory. This year’s Bach Festival is dedicated to Raleigh, who has been the chorus master of the Festival since 1974.

String Project Provides Learning Through Music
The W.C. Bryant String Project grew out of a Learning Through Music partnership between W.C. Bryant School, a Cleveland Metropolitan school, and The Cleveland Orchestra. Beginning in 1997, the program quickly expanded to include K–5 in 2002. Learning Through Music currently serves eight elementary schools in the greater Cleveland area.

Behind the Scenes:  Making The Phantom Spectacular
Those who saw B-W’s production of The Phantom of the Opera agreed that the cast and orchestra mastered the challenges show posed. The same may be said of those who worked behind the scenes. The program listed more than 80 people who were not on stage but had a hand in making the production look spectacular and run smoothly through the 12 performances.

Summer Scholars Selected
Seven B-W students have been named summer Scholars for 2008. The program enables students to pursue a research or creative project of their design under the supervision of a faculty member.

Paul James Named Director of Campus Diversity Affairs
Following a national search, Paul James has been named Director of Campus Diversity Affairs at Baldwin-Wallace College.

Program Promotes Careers in Science to High School Students
“CSI: College Science Investigation – A Forensics Academy for High School Juniors and Seniors,” is a cooperative effort between Baldwin-Wallace College and Cleveland State University.  The program is designed to expose students from a variety of  backgrounds to potential careers in science and teaching science. 

Professor's Play Explores Holocaust Issues
A Nightmare of Crime, written and directed by Winget, is the story of the sonderkommando, Jewish prisoners who were forced to aid in the extermination of their comrades (and sometimes their own families) and were themselves sent to the gas chambers.

Commencement Speakers Spengler, Briggs
A Baldwin-Wallace alumnus and a prominent local lawyer will address students and their families in under-graduate and graduate programs during the 158th commencement ceremonies on May 10 and 11, 2008.

Purchase of Hamilton House Apartments Provides Additional Student Housing
A burgeoning on-campus population at Baldwin-Wallace has created a need for additional student housing.  With this in mind, the College has purchased Hamilton House, an apartment complex located on Front St., at the north end of the campus. The 48 units and four adjacent townhouses will house 100 students beginning fall semester, 2008.

New Programs Meet Changing Demands
A rapidly changing world requires adaptation. At Baldwin-Wallace, new programs offer students the opportunity to pursue interests that will better prepare them for the job market or graduate school once they leave B-W.

Conservatory Outreach Program Recognized for Programs for Retirees
The Conservatory Outreach Department has been singled out by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, an organization that represents more than 350 independent and collegiate divisional schools across the U.S.  The honor recognizes the Conservatory’s programs for retirees such as the New Horizons program, group classes and private lessons.

Immersion Study Abroad Trip Allows Students to Earn Credit During Visit to India
The Explorations/Study Abroad program at Baldwin-Wallace College launched a new exchange initiative with an immersion experience in India during the winter break. Twenty students went on a 14-day study tour of the country accompanied by professors Ellen Posman (religion) and Javier Morales-Ortiz (political science) and B-W President Richard Durst and his wife, Karen.

International Business Added as New Major/Minor
B-W has added international Business as a new undergraduate major/minor. 

The Phantom Has Left the Building
The Baldwin-Wallace production of The Phantom of the Opera was a huge success. The work of so many in the Conservatory and Theatre Department paid off with a stellar production that garnered rave reviews and was sold out weeks before it opened.

Conservatory Recognized for Work With Seniors
The Outreach Department of the Conservatory has been recognized by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts for its programming for retirees.

Green Business Class Presents Energy Audit of the College
Students in a fall "Green Business" class presented a detailed report of ways that B-W could shrink its environmental footprint in regard to energy consumption. Their suggestions ranged from immediate changes to those which might incorporated into long-range planning.

B-W Establishes Center for Wellness and Research in the Performing Arts
A new program at the Conservatory aims to help produce performing artists who understand issues of health and wellness as they relate to performers and, hopefully, extend their careers.

College Prepared to Respond to Emergencies
While B-W is one of the safest colleges in Ohio, the administration continues to review and update its emergency response policy.

B-W Senior "Profits" from Murder
Joe Levy, an English major and mathematics minor, is well known on campus.  An avid writer, he has written and helped to produce a series of murder mysteries that have become popular among his peers.

 Research House Expands Learning Opportunities
The goal of a new campus residence is to enhance scholarship and encourage individual research.

A Summer Speech Camp Improved Communication for Non-Verbal Children
B-W students obtained valuable clinical experience while working with a pilot program to help non-verbal children improve their communication skills.

B-W Production of "The Phantom of the Opera" Opens with All Performances Sold Out
Eager anticipation resulted in all performances being sold out five weeks prior to the opening of the show.  Baldwin-Wallace was selected by R&H Theatricals as one of only six test sites for pilot productions of the popular musical.  "It's as close to the professional production as your going to get," proclaims one opening night audience member.

 B-W Selected As One of Six To Do a Pilot Production of Andew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera"
R&H Theatricals, a division of  The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, has selected Baldwin-Wallace as one of six pilot productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical in anticipation of its eventual release into the community, regional and school theatrical market.  The show is scheduled to run on campus in November.

B-W Names Eighth President
Richard W. Durst, dean of the College of Arts and Architecture and executive director of University Arts Services at the Pennsylvania State University, has been named to be the eighth president of Baldwin-Wallace College.

Baldwin-Wallace College establishes the Center for Innovation and Growth (CIG) to enhance our existing commitment to the growth and future success of Northeast Ohio.

Trustee Issues $1 Million Conservatory Challenge
B-W trustee and alumna Beth Swailes issues $1million challenge as part of her pledge to Transforming Lives:  The Campaign for Baldwin-Wallace College.

$5 Million Challenge Grant Spurs Science Facility Efforts
Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Baldwin-Wallace College
has received a major boost in the form of a $5 million challenge from James A. Thomas ’59, of Los Angeles, a member of the B-W Board of Trustees. 

B-W Receives $1.65 Million for Entrepreneurial Programs
A $1.65 million grant, as part of The Burton D. Morgan Foundation-Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Northeast Ohio Collegiate Entrepreneurship Program, a Kauffman Campuses Initiative, will develop initiatives at Baldwin-Wallace College to extend the entrepreneurial mindset across the campus.

$50,000 Grant Funds New Public Interest Research Center
A $50,000 grant from the John P. Murphy Foundation has funded the new Public Interest Research Center at Baldwin-Wallace.

$1.5 Million Grant Endows Chair in Entrepreneurship
A grant from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation will endow a chair in entrepreneurship and help provide leadership for campus initiatives to nurture innovation and growth in the region’s economy.
