In addition to the intrinsic rewards of helping others,
community service includes fun, fellowship and experiential
learning. This year B-W introduced a new Pre-Weekend of Welcome
program called Discover Cleveland that promoted the value of community service. Discover Cleveland was a four-day residential program for incoming freshmen that
offered them the opportunity to stay overnight at B-W's urban
residential facility (Archwood House), visit Cleveland sights and participate in service
initiatives.
Each year B-W students contribute thousands of hours locally
through community service and service-learning opportunities
sponsored by the Office of
Community Outreach. Students can choose:
- weekly programs that include free transportation to local agencies supporting community needs.
- alternative break programs held at host sites across the nation during Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks.
- Project Affinity, an urban summer service program where students can gain internship credit as well as community contacts.
- international programs that combine service with cultural awareness.
- service-learning initiatives that foster experiential learning, community awareness and civic responsibility.
